I just answered my own question. I suspected it was some kind of viral marketing. For some reason I check my Steam RSS feed before all the news sites which are reporting it with all kinds of Half Life and Portal 2 speculation - http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3178172

Hmm sounds like adding Easter egg's after the game has released.

Maybe if you get the code right it will tell you were some super uber easter egg somewere else in the game...

bioshock 2 has an easter egg that rewards you, it's know as experimental telport plasmid, look up on youtube, it's crazy
