I got an email from Microsoft today. The Windows 7 Team wrote: It’s time to upgrade from the Windows 7 Release Candidate
While most people who tested Windows 7 have now moved to the final version, some are still running the Release Candidate. If you haven’t moved yet, it’s time to replace the RC.
Starting on March 1, 2010 your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Your work will not be saved during the shutdown.
The Windows 7 RC will fully expire on June 1, 2010. Your PC running the Windows 7 RC will continue shutting down every two hours and your files won’t be saved during shutdown. In addition, your wallpaper will change to a solid black background with a persistent message on your desktop. You’ll also get periodic notifications that Windows isn’t genuine. That means your PC may no longer be able to obtain optional updates or downloads requiring genuine Windows validation.
To avoid interruption, please reinstall a prior version of Windows or move to Windows 7. In either case, you’ll need to do a custom (clean) install to replace the RC. As with any clean installation, you’ll need to back up your data then reinstall your applications and restore the data. For more details about replacing the RC, see the Knowledge Base article KB 971767. For more information, visit the Window 7 Forum.
Thanks again for helping us test Windows 7.
The Windows 7 Team

All good things must come to an end. Now I just have to work out how to buy it. Does anyone know which version I want if I format my computer and upgrade alot? Other than the cracked version or linux. The stuff I keep hearing about the activation process makes me want to pirate it or go back to XP.

I've been looking at Pro but probably would be happy with Home. Thats not really my dilema though. My dilema is paying $300 for my OS. I was hoping I could get someone to sell me an OEM version but I've heard its a mega pain if not impossible to reuse if you do a major upgrade which makes it not very practical for me really. It seems like too much of a pain even with the retail copy. I basically want the version where I never have to call microsoft and ask them nicely to let me use the software I paid for.

Thats my dilema: - $200 for OEM that might not work with an upgrade - $300 for Retail version, or - $0 for a cracked version that could be glitchy but don't have to worry about licenses.
I'm curious about multiple user copies if a few of us wanted to go in maybe.

Dunno really... I've seen a 3 user family version every now and then but I don't think its available in Australia or maybe its only the home version and I've been looking at the pro. And that could be a bit dodgy been in one persons name and they would have to call up to activate for the other two users.
And companies wonder why people want to pirate their software since they make you jump through a million hoops to get it.

Lol, well I use enterprise at work and home premium at home and the only thing im missing is at home is... wait nothing and I can still code everything I need to using SDK's at home etc... Seriously don't ever use built in backup. XP mode still works in home premium, initially bit locker wasnt available but it is in home premium now...

I'm probably just in XP mindset where the Home version was pretty ordinary sometimes compared to the pro version. Then Vista just got messed up and confusing with its variations.
It's still a pain buying the full retail version when the upgrade and OEM versions are much cheaper but could be a bit dodgy in my situation.

I did think about Ultimate because its only about $20 more and thought the languages could be useful for my wife.

If your going to use the upgrade on your PC and still use that XP serial on your netbook I'm guessing you'll probably run into some licensing issues. Thats why I want to get the full retail package. Well I would really prefer an OEM copy but it's licensing is too limited.

Ok, I decided I would just go with Home Premium. Picked up my copy from Good Guys this afternoon. Was advertised as $268 and was only $254 for 'cash'. I don't think I could find it online for cheaper than that!

Hollis wrote: :o this must be the 1st mention of someone buying software legally. Just because we don't mention it doesn't mean it doesn't happen Buying anything illegally is pretty hard anyway. It gets mentioned more than pirating since that isn't allowed on this forum Hollis wrote: Hmmm maybe I will just buy the full version rather than try and get an upgrade... The upgrade version is about $100 cheaper at Good guys but I don't think it would've worked for my situation. Pro was another $100 more which I couldn't really justify for a couple of features I'm most likely never going to use. Now I just have to get busy backing up my computer ready to format.

Did you finally get sick of 2hour resets? The choice between $0 for XP and $250 for Win7 was pretty tough. Utilising all my ram was probably the biggest deal for me but probably doesn't make much difference.
